Building the Neverending Ruin of the World (BNRW)

2011-2013

Building the Neverending Ruin of the World uses the images results of Google searches of the term “ruin,” in diferent locations and languages to create a collection of virtual ruins.

Performed live at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lima in Peru (2017), Museum of Contemporary Art of the Vasque Country in Spain (2012), Abrons Arts Center in New York (2011), Carrión downloaded all images from each search, and created unique pieces by superimposing them, materializing Internet’s language and location hierarchy at that specific moment in time to question how collective memory is changing as consequence of virtual systems of information organization.

Each of these abstract landscapes is considered by the artist as a ruin in it self since the resulting images won’t never again be the same. The project is ongoing and can be performed live for the creation of a new ruin specific to a place and time, or existing ruins can be shown.
